Welcome to Catholic apologetics, led by Dr. Jim Dobbins, Author of Take My Hand: A personal retreat companion. This is a podcast of class we hold each Sunday after the 5:00PM Mass at our parish, St. William of York, in Stafford, Virginia. Just finished an RCIA program? This is the next stop on your faith journey.
In these classes we look at the different truths of Catholic doctrine and why we know they are true. We also discuss spiritual growth, examine the liturgy of the Catholic Mass and do scripture studies. Please encourage your friends to listen. I also encourage you to leave a comment about our podcasts. Since I can no longer post documents, if you want the slides or any other documents for any class, just e-mail me at jhdphd@gmail.com and I will reply with the documents attached. If you are getting the class files from iTunes and would like to see the full set of available classes for download, you can get them all at http://yorked.podomatic.com
We are now in a new series titled Revelation. The Book of Revelation is said to be the most read and least understood book of the bible. We hope to provide some clarity into your reading of this amazing book. As we go through this class, you may have many questions. Please feel free to send me any questions through Podomatic, or directly to me at jhdphd@gmail.com.
I also recommend you get a marvelous CD titled Welcome to the Catholic Church, from Harmony Media. This CD can be ordered from Ignatius Press, the 101 Foundation, or from your local Catholic book store (ex: http://realcatholic.com/ in Richmond, Va). This CD is a huge treasure trove of material on the Catholic Church, including two searchable bibles, the Catechisms, Council documents, and many, many other documents. I highly recommend it, and it is a genuine bargain.
Please invite your friends to join us.
Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is a particular topic you would like to see addressed.

I post any related document files, such as slides or other documents, which can be downloaded from our web site at http://yorked.podomatic.com.
We are now discussing the Diary of St. Faustina. Because the Diary is too large to really do a complete study, we will use the Concordance to pick topics and discuss what the Diary says about those topics. You can order the Diary of St. Faustina and the Concordance from the Divine Mercy Center in Stockbridge, MA, or from an on-line Catholic Book Store like the one for which a link is provided in the next paragraph.
I also invite you to visit Meg Jaworowski's bible study class which can be found at http://www.catholicbiblebootcamp.com and http://catholicbiblebootcamp.podomatic.com.
Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is a particular topic you would like to see addressed.

A lot has been going on with regard to the liturgy. Pope Benedict issued his encyclical on the Extraordinary form of the Mass, making it available to everyone, and the new missal for the Ordinary form of the Mass will be issued soon. Because of the importance of this topic, I decided to provide this lesson series on the views of Pope Benedict on the Mass. This is part 5 of a re-delivery of the class we did on the mind of Pope Benedict and his views on the liturgy before we started recording classes and publishing our podcasts. I wanted our internet listeners to have the benefit of this class. Because the in-house members of the class have already been through this class, I hope you will forgive their absence in this series.

We are now discussing the blueprint for sainthood given to us by Jesus. Throughout the four gospels, He told us what we should do. If we do what Jesus said to do, we will have our path to sainthood laid out for us. What He told us to do is collected in the document "What Jesus Said To Do", which has already been uploaded. This document will be the basis for our discussions for this series of classes.

Please note that in this class I borrowed a recorder because I forgot mine, and about 25 minutes into the class it ran out of memory, so we had to stop and delete some files and start again. Therefore, there may be a discontinuity at some point in the class, but it is not you or your system, it was our fault.

Welcome to Catholic apologetics, led by Dr. Jim Dobbins, Author of Take My Hand: A personal retreat companion. In these classes we look at the different truths of Catholic doctrine and why we know they are true. We also discuss spiritual growth, examine the liturgy of the Catholic Mass and do scripture studies. Please encourage your friends to listen. I also encourage you to leave a comment about our podcasts. I post any related document files, which can be downloaded from our web site at http://yorked.podomatic.com.
We are now discussing the blueprint for sainthood given to us by Jesus. Throughout the four gospels, He told us what we must do. If we do what Jesus said to do, we will have our path to sainthood laid out for us. What He told us to do is collected in the document “What Jesus Said To Do”, which has already been uploaded. This document will be the basis for our discussions for this series of classes.

I had previously removed several of our older podcasts because I had reached the PodOmatic storage space limit. PodOmatic recently introduced a new level of service which provides a limit of 15 Gig of storage instead of 5 Gig. I subscribed to that service so I am now beginning to re-post some of our previous lessons that I had removed.
Please download whatever you need to your own systems because sooner or later I will reach our new limit and have to remove the older classes. Take advantage of this period to complete your library of our lessons.

This is the second of our daily mercy minutes. I encourage you to get the diary of St. Faustina, Divine Mercy in My Soul, and read it daily as part of your Lenten spiritual works.
February 22, 2009 01:45 PM PST
As we enter and proceed through the season of Lent, I plan to post what I call a Mercy Minute each day from now at least through Divine Mercy Sunday. These Mercy Minutes are short readings, usually a minute or so, or less, taken from the Diary of St. Faustina Kowalska, Divine Mercy In My Soul. This book has literally changed lives, and I have personally seen that happen in friends of mine. I hope and pray that these short excerpts from the diary will encourage you to get the book and delve into the full benefits and mysteries of Our Lord’s Divine Mercy. You really do owe it to yourself.

We are now studying some of the letters of St. Paul, currently the letter to the Hebrews.

With this lesson, we complete our study of the Letter to the Ephesians. Our next class will begin our study of Paul’s Letter to the Galatians.
Prayer for Monday night, Nov 3, 2008: Heavenly Father, Why is this night unlike any other night? On this night we pray that with your leave our Holy Mother, Queen of Angels, will amass her army of holy angels, St. Michael the Archangel and all the Archangels of heaven, all the heavenly Cherubim, Seraphim, Powers, Principalities, Thrones, Dominations, the Guardian Angel of the United States, the Guardian Angels of each state, and the Guardian Angels of every individual in the United States, born and unborn, and the Guardian Angels of every child who has ever been aborted, and send them across the United States, into every region and corner of this country. And reminiscent of the angels at the first Passover, let them drive out every evil demon from this nation, which is consecrated to Our Mother under her Immaculate Conception and as Our Lady of the Americas, so that as we vote for the next President of the United States, we may vote to transform our nation to a nation under God, a nation that turns away from the culture of death and depravity, and by your grace help us be transformed into a nation that turns toward a culture of life and virtue and holiness, accepting the will of God as our most important priority, and obedience to His will as our most sacred treasure. We ask this in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ, your Only-begotten Son, and through the intercession of Padre Pio, patron saint of the unborn children. Amen

We have been studying John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, probably the most important catechesis of the Church in the past 300 years. This class is our second to last class in this series. We are using the actual homilies of John Paul II given during his Wednesday audiences. Each is fairly short and we will cover multiple teachings in each lesson. You can download the audiences of John Paul II by going to http://www.EWTN.com, and doing a document library search on Theology of the Body. There are a total of 129 audiences. You can also find the documents on a marvelous CD titled Welcome to the Catholic Church, from Harmony Media. September 01, 2008 05:35 PM PDT
This is the MP3 file of Theology of the Body - Class 11. There are two document files that go with this audio file. One is the paper on Theology of the Body and the Imaculate Conception. The other is the set of readings and related questions for Class 11.
Welcome to Catholic apologetics, led by Dr. Jim Dobbins, Author of Take My Hand: A personal retreat companion. In these lessons we look at the different truths of Catholic doctrine and why we know they are true. We also discuss spiritual growth, examine the liturgy of the Catholic Mass and do scripture studies. Please encourage your friends to listen. I also encourage you to leave a comment about our podcasts.
We are conducting our 2008 Summer program, a study of John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. We are using the actual homilies of John Paul II given during his Wednesday audiences. Each is fairly short and we will cover multiple teachings in each lesson. You can download the homilies of John Paul II by going to http://www.EWTN.com, and doing a document library search on Theology of the Body. There are a total of 128 homilies. You can also find the documents on a marvelous CD titled Welcome to the Catholic Church, from Harmony Media.

This paper discusses the Theology of the Body and how it relates to the Immaculate Conception of Mary.
August 25, 2008 03:39 PM PDT
In this seminar we discuss the generative meaning of the body in addition to the nuptial meaning of the body. We also discuss the Immaculate Conception in light of the nuptial meaning of the body, and why Mary had to be preserved from Original Sin in order for her to be able to make the only proper Nuptial gift of her body that was fitting for the spouse of the Holy Spirit and the Mother of God, and why no woman afflicted by Original Sin could have made a fiting gift of herself in light of what we have been studying about the Nuptial Meaning of the Body. We also discuss the impact of death on the generative meaning of the body.

This is the handout for the first few classes of our series on Theology of the Body. I have gone through Part 1 of Theology of the Body, which goes through July 21, 1982, and have listed at the beginning of the document the definition of Theology of the Body from JPII and the major themes in Part I that I will focus on during class. Given the limitations of time and the amount of material we would like to cover, and the difficulties of some of the philosophical language in this work, especially for those who have not studied philosophy, I have bolded the parts that bring out the conclusory ideas I plan to focus on during class.

We are now engaged in a study of John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. This first introductory session is discussing the paper I posted on Sacramental Marriage and the Eucharist. The texts of John Paul II’s Theology of the Body can be retrieved at http://www.ewtn.com. There are 128 individual files, each of them short teachings John Paul gave during his Wednesday audiences. Go to the document library and do a search on Theology of the Body. You can also find it on the marvelous CD Welcome to the Catholic Church, which I highly recommend.

These are our questions for tonight:
In John 17, we find in the prayer of Jesus to the Father His desire "that they may all be One..."
1. After reading the accusations brought against Paul by Tertulius (24:2-8) and Paul's response (24: 10-21), what dynamic do you think is happening here? What is Paul's objective and how is he being received? Do you think Paul has unity in mind when he preaches in the synagogue or the Temple in Jerusalem? Why do you think Paul seems to get the Jew stirred up whenever he preaches in the synagogue?
2. How does the above relate to the statements in the Catechism on Christian Unity (The Church is One) (813-822), particularly the section on wounds to unity 817-819)?
3. Do you think Paul had unity of Jews and Christians in mind when he preached? Why do you think some of the Jews could not come to terms with this unity as expressed in the continuing Revelation from God in the person of Jesus Christ? Did they see The Way as something distinct from Judaism, and ddi Paul see it as a continuation of Judaism?
4. We saw in earlier chapter that Paul had a yearing to go to Rome (19:21), and we also saw in 23:11 that Jesus appeared to Paul and told Paul he must bear witness to Jesus in Rome. During his tribunal before Festus, Paul appealed his case to the emperor, as he had a right to do as a Roman citizen(25:11-12). But after his tribunal before Agrippa, Agrippa says to Festus, "This man could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar." What would have happened if Paul had not appealed to Caesar? Would he have gotten to Rome?
5. Looking back on the entire book of Acts, what do you think are the most important things we learn from Acts of the Apostles? What is is value to the body of scripture?
